On June 22, 2023, saxophonist and clarinettist Peter Brötzmann passed away. Two years earlier, on the occasion of his eightieth birthday, the INSEL in Wuppertal had organized a three-day festival with international guests - BROEtz 80! - which celebrated the outstanding status of this exceptional artist. The musicians and the audience literally came from all over the world to celebrate these three days in our jazz city.

In the aftermath, Peter Brötzmann and I decided to further develop the unique program concept and establish a biennial international festival for free music. A festival that does not invite ensembles that are currently playing in clubs and halls up and down the country, but artists who have something new and unusual, sometimes disturbing, in their playing. With BROEtz 23!, which Peter Brötzmann helped to prepare, it finally became clear that the unique significance he has achieved in the international jazz world is a Wuppertal specialty, the continuation of which we absolutely want to ensure - through a festival program with an absolutely uncompromising, forward-looking artistic vision.

The idea of free music would lead itself ad absurdum if we stuck to the traditional “sounds like whoopataal”. BROEtz 2025 presents musicians who stand for fresh, innovative, unheard paths of improvisation. Where others discover that a certain band, a certain album, a stylistic niche is particularly easy to market commercially, we - in the spirit of Peter Brötzmann - consistently search for new musical concepts and bring them - sometimes for the first time together - to our stage!

Zum 80. Geburtstag des Saxophonisten und Klarinettisten Peter Brötzmann veranstaltete INSEL e.V. im Jahr 2021 das dreitägige Festival „BRÖtz 80!“ mit internationalen Gästen, um die herausragende Stellung dieses Ausnahmekünstlers zu feiern.

Damals entstand der Wunsch, ein alle zwei Jahre stattfindendes internationales „Festival für freie Musik“ in Wuppertal zu etablieren: das „BRÖtz!“. Ein Festival, das keine Ensembles einlädt, die gerade landauf, landab die Bühnen bespielen, sondern Künstler*innen, die etwas Neues und Ungewohntes, bisweilen Verstörendes in ihrem Spiel haben. Bis zuletzt hat Peter Brötzmann daran mitgearbeitet und Musiker*innen aus der ganzen Welt versammelt, um dieses Festival aus der Taufe zu heben.

Die von ihm und Wolfgang Schmidtke kuratierte Besetzung von „BRÖtz 2023!“ versteht sich als Kombination langjähriger Weggefährt*innen und junger Künstler*innen, die gerade dabei sind, die Entwicklung der Improvisierten Musik neu zu definieren.

On the occasion of the 80th birthday of saxophonist and clarinettist Peter Brötzmann, INSEL e.V. organized the three-day festival "BRÖtz 80!" with international guests in 2021 to celebrate the outstanding status of this exceptional artist.

At that time, the desire arose to establish a biennial international "Festival for Free Music" in Wuppertal: the "BRÖtz!". A festival that does not invite ensembles that are currently playing on stages up and down the country, but artists who have something new and unusual, sometimes disturbing, in their playing. Peter Brötzmann worked on this until the end and gathered musicians from all over the world to launch this festival.

The line-up of "BRÖtz 2023!" curated by him and Wolfgang Schmidtke is a combination of long-time companions and young artists who are in the process of redefining the development of improvised music.

Ganz im Sinne von Vinko Globokar, nachdem ein Musikinstrument kein "sakrosanktes Objekt", sondern lediglich die Verlängerung des Körpers sein sollte.
