Am 06. März 2021 wurde der Saxophonist und Klarinettist Peter Brötzmann 80 Jahre alt. Ihm zu Ehren veranstaltet der INSEL e.V. im ADA vom 27. bis 29. August 2021 ein dreitägiges Festival mit internationalen Gästen, das die herausragende Stellung dieses Ausnahmekünstlers feiert.

Der gebürtige Remscheider Peter Brötzmann beginnt in den 1960er Jahren von Wuppertal aus eine neue Spielart des Jazz zu entwickeln, die schon bald als die eigenständigste, nicht primär von den afroamerikanischen Vorbildern geprägte Art zu Improvisieren Furore macht. Er darf fraglos als der bedeutendste deutsche Jazzmusiker gelten und ist vermutlich bis zum heutigen Tage der Einzige, der es regelmäßig schafft, einen New Yorker Club zu füllen. Diesen Erfolg hat er niemals mit stilistischen Zugeständnissen erreicht, sondern er ist konsequent einen radikal eigenen Weg gegangen und hat dabei eine so raue, direkte, meist vom klassischen „Schönklang“ meilenweit entfernte Spielweise kreiert, dass in der Musikwelt der Begriff „brötzen“ zu einem festen Terminus geworden ist. Seine 1968 erschienene Platte „machine gun“ zählt zu den Meilensteinen des europäischen Jazz und wurde vom Rolling Stone Magazin im Jahre 2013 in seiner Liste „Die besten 100 Jazz-Alben“ auf Platz 33 gewählt (wohlgemerkt ist das keine Jahresliste, es geht da um die besten 100 Alben der Jazzgeschichte).

Peter Brötzmann gehört zu den Gründungsmitgliedern des „Globe Unity Orchestra“ und ist auch einer der Gründer des Berliner Plattenlabels „Free Music Production“.

Brötzmann tourt jedes Jahr in ganz Europa, den USA und Japan. Seit dem großen Erfolg der Gruppe „Last Exit“, in der er 1986 auf Sonny Sharrock, Bill Laswell und Shannon Jackson stieß, ist seine Popularität in den USA enorm gestiegen, was u.a. zur Gründung des „Chicago Tentetts“ führte.

Im Katalog der deutschen Nationalbibliothek finden sich 60 Links mit Dateneinträgen zum Werk von Peter Brötzmann. Im Jahre 2005 wurde ihm der Von-der-Heydt-Kulturpreis der Stadt Wuppertal verliehen. 2011 erhielt er den Livetime Achievement Award des Vision Festivals New York, im selben Jahr wurde er mit dem Deutschen Jazzpreis für sein Lebenswerk ausgezeichnet.

„Einer wie er klingt nie harmlos. Seine Musik ist wild, ungestüm, aufbegehrend, rau, ungeschliffen, energiegeladen, ausdrucksgierig und wahrhaftigkeitsversessen. Jeder Ton ein Statement. Es ist Musik mit viel Puste und gehörig Lust am Sound. Und diese Lust wiederum lässt offenbar auch mit zunehmender Reife nicht nach. Seine Sprache ist universell: Musik als Aufbegehren. Eine, die alle Töne dieser Welt ausprobiert. Und die mit ungeschönten Tönen zeigt, wie die Welt ist“, hieß es anlässlich seines 75. Geburtstags im Bayerischen Rundfunk. Damals, vor fünf Jahren, gab es ihm zu Ehren ein fünftägiges Festival in Warschau.

On March 06, 2021, the saxophonist and clarinetist Peter Brötzmann turned 80 years old. In his honor, INSEL e.V. will host a three-day festival at the ADA from August 27-29, 2021, with international guests celebrating the outstanding status of this exceptional artist.

In the 1960s, Peter Brötzmann, who was born in Remscheid, began to develop a new style of jazz from Wuppertal, which soon caused a sensation as the most independent way of improvising, not primarily influenced by African-American models. He can unquestionably be considered the most important German jazz musician and is probably the only one to this day who regularly manages to fill a New York club. He has never achieved this success by making stylistic concessions, but has consistently gone his own radical way, creating a style of playing so raw, direct, and usually miles away from the classical "beautiful sound" that in the music world the term "brötzen" has become a fixed term. His 1968 record "machine gun" is one of the milestones of European jazz and was voted 33rd by Rolling Stone magazine in 2013 in its list of "The Best 100 Jazz Albums" (mind you, this is not an annual list, it's about the best 100 albums in jazz history).

Peter Brötzmann is one of the founding members of the "Globe Unity Orchestra" and is also one of the founders of the Berlin record label "Free Music Production".

Brötzmann tours every year throughout Europe, the USA and Japan. In 2011 he received the Livetime Achievement Award of the Vision Festival New York, and in the same year he was awarded the German Jazz Prize for his life's work.

"Someone like him never sounds harmless. His music is wild, impetuous, rebellious, raw, unpolished, energetic, expressive and obsessed with truth. Every note a statement. It is music with a lot of puff and a lot of desire for the sound. And this desire, in turn, apparently does not diminish with increasing maturity. Its language is universal: music as rebellion. One that tries out all the sounds of this world. And one that shows with unadorned tones how the world is," it was said on the occasion of his 75th birthday on Bayerischer Rundfunk. At that time, five years ago, there was a five-day festival in Warsaw in his honor.
